I drew this picture a few years ago for a local competition at Austin Books and Comics. I didn't win, but had a great time making it. Especially, the screaming cacti aliens. NOTE: This was created WAY before the movie "Cowboys & Aliens"...so this is not an homage to that film. If anything, it is an homage to the old War of the Worlds film (take note of the UFO designs)

I haven't posted any new work in a while because I'm currently pursuing a childhood dream...creating a comic novel. It took 31 years, but I've finally gotten around to planning out 160 pages of story arc (with a larger story arc extending over 3 other books). I'll finish the first 60 pages by January (inked, colored, lettered) and begin submitting it to publishers. If that doesn't work out, I'll attempt self-publishing. Either way, this is fun and VERY different than painting. Here are two images from the comic...one colored, one in B/W. Expect more updates over the next few months.

Systematic Theology Postcard

Last month I was asked to design a postcard for a Systematic Theology Study happening next year here in Austin. My dilemma was "how do you design THEOLOGY?" I began leafing through my photography and ran across a few photos I took in Israel back in 2009. The one I ultimately chose is a sundrenched shot of the Dead Sea and some of the isolated land around it. The typeface is Museo (no matter how much I see it used, it is still amazing) and the secondary image is a graphic from an old, 30lb Bible I keep in the studio.

I'll post the back of the card once I'm finished with it.

10ft worth of on-going comic side project. I've always wanted to try some long-form comics, now I'm finally getting around to it. Once lettering/coloring is complete, I will post the first few "chapters" on the new QuartermanStudio site (still working on that).

I finished this painting last night. Growing up I always enjoyed seeing the shapes kudzu would make growing on telephone poles, trees, rusty cars, whatever. To me, they resembled dinosaurs.

The Wire Man

Last week I was in Jackson, MS and had the privilege of spending some time with Charles Lindsey: Mississippi sculptor, painter, inventor, philosopher, historian, poet, etc. I first came in contact with Charles 10+ years ago, when my Mom invited him to participate in an arts day at my High School. I always new him as the "wire man", because he sculpted people's names and portraits out of wire.

He keeps a lot of his work in his Mom's old home, where he was born. It reminded me of Francis Bacon's studio (as seen here). Old sculptures, paintings, Bible drill trophies, toys, clothes, and various debris were stacked in clumps around the walls. Looking up you can see Charles' hand prints scattered across the ceilings. When I inquired about them he mentioned the "Sistine Chapel".

What I remember most about Charles was that he predicted he would die by the end of 2005. When I met with him last week I asked him about this prediction. "Well," he said. "I was wrong...it was my brother." He pointed out that he painted his Mom's old house 3 different colors in honor of 3 different family members that died around that time.
